Oscar nods are in, and I’m reminded of last year’s Academy Awards’ “Tribute to Horror”. All those films that had never previously graced an Oscar broadcast, all lined up and trotted out– The Academy’s version of the Special Olympics.
Horror deserves recognition. In good times and bad, we create a steady stream of revenue for Hollywood. At the box office, it was “Paranormal Activity”. On the Blockbuster shelf, the titles are too many to name. While romantic comedies and acton pictures are star-driven and budget dependent, horror films can accomplish as much with a shoe-string budget and a no-name cast. If it bleeds, it leads.
Still, status-conscious Hollywood prefers to champion movies like “Winters Bone” (haven’t seen it,) or “The Kids Are All Right” (seen it– not bad but not great, so why the fuss?), and leave Horror locked in the cellar, shovelling coal into the commercial furnace.
And that’s probably a good thing.
Back in the early 00’s, there was a sudden surge of remakes and star horror vehicles done by the big studios. And they were almost to a frame empty, sterile confections. Hollywood can’t do horror like it ought to be done. You can’t just skate along the thick ice of structure and paradigm. You gotta go deep, and find the crazy fish with the jagged teeth down below, and pray you’ll make it back alive to the surface.
Horror belongs in the dark, like mushrooms, mold and murder. Keep that light off, and let us grow into the spectral monstrosities that will scare the next generation. Because if you recognize horror, it ain’t horrible any more.

Hey Gang! I want to share one of my favorite Edgar Allen Poe films with you. A little seen gem called SPIRIT OF THE DEAD. It was made way back in 1968. It’s a French-Italian co-production. The movie was directed by three international stars at the time. Roger Vadim, Louis Malle & Federico Fellini. The cast was also international; Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda, Alain Delon, Terence Stamp and Peter Fonda. The film was narrated by the great Vincent Price. Terrific, huh?
The film is three separate Poe tales. All are hung together by Mr. Price’s intros. (He’s in a subdued mood here, which aids in the creepy tone.) The first tale has Jane Fonda as an aristocratic baroness who is bored by her hedonistic lifestyle. One day, out riding, she meets a mysterious stranger (played by her brother … how weird is that?) who captures her fancy, he challenges her lifestyle. She kills him in a fit of rage. That night, a mysterious white stallion appears. Fonda and the steed form a bond. They go for long rides every night. (There’s something about this horse that’s haunting, but what?) Fonda no longer wants to party. She just wants to ride, ride, ride … but, towards what? Very effective mood, time and place. A terrific piece of film making by Roger Vadim (who was married to Ms. Fonda).
William Windom is the tale of a man so in love with himself and his looks that it begins to erode him from the inside out (his spirit is decaying). He’s a man who uses everybody for his own needs. (He’s a shit to his fellow soldiers, treats all women like whores and has no empathy for anyone.) Then one day, people start telling him of his good deeds. This is confusing ‘cuz he doesn’t do good deeds. At a card game, he comes face to face with his other self (his good self). This good self creates rage in William. He challenges the “good” William to a card game. He tries to cheat but is called on it by the “good” William. They have a thrilling duel. (“Good” William does something that gives “evil” William the upper hand.) It’s a wonderful piece of storytelling. Alain Delon is handsome, arrogant, brash, kind, warm and angelic. It’s a tour de force! The direction was by Louis Malle. It’s a period piece dripping with a sense of loneliness and uncertainty.
The last of the trio is called Tobey Damnit. It’s a hellish vision of what it’s like to be a international film superstar. Terrence Stamp is a world weary director returning home to convalesce. He’s having visions of death. (The question is, are his visions just those of a genius or a mad man?) It’s a simple tale told in in a bold fashion by Mr. Fellini in his garish style. Mr. Stamp is a beautifully tormented artist. This tale has an other- worldliness that sets it apart from the other two.
If your video store, Netflix or video on demand have SPIRIT OF THE DEAD in its library, check it out. It’s more a mood piece than a scare fest, but its spectacular film making done right. Treat yourself to some cinematic Poe gold!

“I don’t like horror,” she said, pouting a cute little grimace.
The buzz in the large convention hall was kinetic and deafening, perhaps akin to the last sound a man hears when being electrocuted. I kept my smile stapled to my face, my cheeks pinned up to my eye sockets. I tried to remain positive. We were all supposed to be positive.
“Everyone likes horror,” I said. “The Twilight Zone?”
She shook her head, an apology glimmering in her eyes.
Well, this was fucked. The exercise was supposed to be one of unqualified support, to enable our networking skills. I had listened to her describe her dreams and livelihood, with enthusiasm and energy and lots of rigorous nodding. She sold vitamins. Oh, but these vitamins were different. (Nod, nod.) These vitamins derived from some Peruvian extract. (Nod.) This new line of vitamins was going to put her on the map. (Nod, Nod!) My soul shriveled in the insincerity, but my integrity could wait a bit. Soon I would bask in the glow of her reciprocation.
“I’m a filmmaker,” I said. “A writer.” Her back immediately straightened with surprise, and the room brightened with her sudden interest, so much more appealing than my hackneyed head-bobbing.
“What kind of stuff do you write?”
“Horror.”
A slight beat as she stiffened. Then the small shake of her head, the re-folding of her spine, and the cute pout. “I don’t like horror.”
She sells vitamins! “Everyone likes horror,” I replied, trying to win her back. “The Twilight Zone?” The horror standard. Mainstream classic television, with marathons playing on basic cable every New Year’s Eve, the Twilight Zone is where the horror genre connects with civilians. But even this left her cold.
The exercise was over, although most others in the room were still working it, having found some commonality. She and I fell silent, both still smiling inanely. As we parted ways to exchange partners, we did not trade business cards. I mused on cool horror ideas involving Peruvian vitamins and tried to come up with a new line of attack.
Horror is a wedge issue. People either love it or hate it. But how can you build a bridge to the general population, and teach them that there’s more to horror than bloody decapitations, torture porn and zombies? How can you shove a foot in the door of their cultural sensibilities?
My next partner was 5’7″, toned body made of steel. About twenty-one, he was going to be a life coach. At least my smile was sincere, although I did force myself to choke back laughter. Finally, it was my turn to share. “I’m a filmmaker, a writer.”
The same surprise—I guess not many writers come to these things. The same question; “What sort of stuff do you write?”
“Ho-” I stopped. As the wise man said from the platform not twenty minutes ago, if you want to change the results, you have to change the actions that lead to the results.
“Halloween,” I finally answer. “Halloween themed entertainment.”
“Dude,” he said, smiling broadly, fishing into his bulging chest pocket for a business card to give me. “I love Halloween.”

Hello gang! Let me ask you a question. What was the last creepy movie you saw? (Think about this a minute. Creepy movie.) Name the last moody film you viewed? What about the last film that stayed with you long after seeing the picture?
What am I talking about? I’m talking mood. All horror films have ‘em (at least the good ones do). Who can forget the first image of The Thing. A blinding snow storm pounds an Arctic research compound. Right away we’re thrown into the snow. We’re with a handful of scientists and military personnel. We’re cut off from the rest of the world. Don’t forget, Jaws. Three men adrift on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Waiting, waiting, waiting for the terror to come up from the deep. Nowhere to run or hide. The boat bobbing back and forth in the salt water. A sense of dread is felt. Camp counselor alone in a downpour of summer rain at a hidden camp. Where can you go to be safe? Friday the 13th.
Many films today never establish the atmosphere. They’re too busy setting up the frights to come, hence they miss establishing the where? A suburban neighborhood (ET), working class community (Close Encounters …), a vacation paradise (Jaws). Don SIEGEL set the tone beautifully with (Invasions of the Body Snatchers) an everyday town, with ordinary folks like you and I … but then … (Great stuff). George LUCAS did it masterfully with his first feature, THX 1138. A soulless society of drones. They all look alike and act alike. Chilling.
Atmosphere can go a long way to hide faults of productions. Cujo (mostly shot on a farm and inside a car). American Werewolf in London, (establish the setting and the mood from the beginning. Its werewolf was a big disappointment.
We want to be taken to a place and time. Set down there to feel the terror to come. Don’t rush, take your time. It pays off in the end.
